The Founding of Kuldhara
Kuldhara was established around the 13th century by the Paliwal Brahmins, a prosperous farming community known for their skill in desert agriculture. At its peak, the settlement was part of a cluster of over 80 villages in the region, with Kuldhara among the most significant.
The Legend of the Overnight Disappearance
Local legend holds that around 1825, the entire population of Kuldhara and its neighboring villages left overnight and never returned, supposedly to escape the unwanted attentions of a local official. Historians offer more grounded explanations too, including drought and heavy taxation, but the mystery is part of what draws visitors here.
What You'll See Today
Today, Kuldhara is a preserved cluster of crumbling sandstone houses, narrow lanes and a small temple, set against the open desert. Walking through the ruins gives a real sense of scale for how large the settlement once was, and it makes for striking photography, especially in the soft light of early morning or late afternoon.
Visiting Kuldhara: What to Know
Kuldhara is usually visited as part of a jeep safari or a longer Jaisalmer tour package, often combined with nearby Khaba Fort. Wear comfortable, closed shoes for walking over uneven stone, and carry water, as there's limited shade across the site.
