Rising above the city on Trikuta Hill, Jaisalmer Fort — also known as Sonar Quila, or the Golden Fort — is the beating heart of the city. Unlike most forts in India, it's still inhabited, with homes, shops and temples woven into its centuries-old walls.
A Fort Unlike Any Other
Built in 1156 AD by the Rajput ruler Rawal Jaisal, the fort is constructed almost entirely from local yellow sandstone, which glows a deep gold at sunrise and sunset — hence its nickname. It's one of the very few 'living forts' left in the world, meaning around a quarter of the old city's population still lives within its walls today.
Inside the Fort Walls
Beyond its four massive gateways, the fort houses narrow winding lanes, a cluster of beautifully carved Jain temples dating back to the 12th and 15th centuries, and the former royal palace complex. Give yourself time to simply wander — the fort is dense with small shops, guesthouses and viewpoints that reward unhurried exploration.
Patwon Ki Haveli, Nathmal Ki Haveli and Salim Singh Ki Haveli
Just below the fort, these three havelis showcase the finest examples of Jaisalmer's sandstone latticework. Patwon Ki Haveli is actually a cluster of five havelis built by wealthy merchant brothers; Nathmal Ki Haveli is known for its symmetrical yet subtly mismatched twin entrances, built by two brothers working from opposite ends; and Salim Singh Ki Haveli features a distinctive curved, peacock-shaped roof.
Best Time to Visit and Photograph the Fort
Early morning and just before sunset are the best times to visit, both for cooler temperatures and for the fort's sandstone walls at their most photogenic. For the classic wide shot of the fort glowing gold against the sky, head to a rooftop café or viewpoint in the old city as the sun goes down.
