Jaisalmer sits at the western edge of Rajasthan, close to the India-Pakistan border, so getting there takes a little more planning than more central cities like Jaipur or Udaipur. Here's how to reach it by air, train and road.
By Air: Jaisalmer Airport
Jaisalmer has its own airport with a limited but growing number of domestic connections, mostly via Delhi and Jaipur. If a direct flight isn't available on your travel dates, flying into Jodhpur Airport and continuing by road (around 5 to 6 hours) is a common alternative.
By Train: The Overnight Option
Jaisalmer Railway Station is well connected to Delhi, Jodhpur and Jaipur, with several overnight trains that let you sleep through the journey and arrive fresh. This is one of the most popular ways to reach the city, especially for travelers coming from Delhi or combining Jaisalmer with a broader Rajasthan circuit.
By Road: Driving In From Jodhpur, Jaipur or Bikaner
Jaisalmer is roughly 5 to 6 hours by road from Jodhpur, 7 to 8 hours from Jaipur, and around 5 hours from Bikaner. The highways are generally in good condition, and a private taxi or self-drive gives you the flexibility to stop at towns and viewpoints along the way.
Getting Around Once You Arrive
Jaisalmer's old city is compact and largely walkable, but you'll want a private taxi or organized tour for excursions to the Sam Sand Dunes, Kuldhara, or other sights outside the city.
